Desmoid tumors are noncancerous growths that occur in the connective tissues, it rarely spreads to other parts of the body. It most often occurs in the abdomen, arms and legs. Another term for Desmoid tumors is aggressive fibromatosis.
The tumor may also be called one of the following;
- Aggressive fibromatosis
- Deep fibromatosis
- Desmoid fibromatosis
- Familial infiltrative fibromatosis
- Hereditary desmoid disease
- Musculoaponeurotic fibromatosis
Symptoms
Desmoid tumor symptoms differ based on where the tumors occur. Desmoid tumors most often happen in the abdomen, arms and legs. But they can form anywhere in the body.
In general, signs and symptoms include;
- A mass or area of swelling
- Pain
- Loss of function in the affected area
- Cramping and nausea, when desmoid tumors occur in the abdomen
Causes
The cause of most desmoid tumors is unknown and thus they are called “sporadic” or random. Most desmoids have mutations in a gene called beta catenin. A minority of desmoid tumors are caused by mutations in a gene called Adenomatosis Polyposis Coli or APC.
Treatment
If a patient is diagnosed with desmoid tumor, the doctor will recommend one of the following treatment plans;
- Monitoring the growth of the tumor
- Surgery
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Chemotherapy and other medications
