Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain crucial hormones.
Hypothyroidism may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease.
Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism include;
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Constipation
- Feeling cold
- Dry skin

Cause of Hypothyroidism
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. “Thyroiditis” is an inflammation of the thyroid gland. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder. With Hashimoto’s, your body produces antibodies that attack and destroy the thyroid gland. Thyroiditis may also be caused by a viral infection.
Other causes of hypothyroidism include;

Treatment
If the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, the condition is known as hyperthyroidism. Treatment for this condition aims to reduce and normalize thyroid hormone production. Sometimes, treatment can cause the levels of the thyroid hormone to remain low permanently. This often occurs after treatment with radioactive iodine.
- Surgical Removal of the Thyroid
- Radiation therapy
- Medications
