Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in a person’s face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, other skin problems or natural ruddiness.
Symptoms
The biggest thing that can be noticed will be redness on the patient’s cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. Less often, the color can appear on the neck, head, ears, or chest.
After a while, broken blood vessels might show through the skin, which can thicken and swell up. Up to half of people with rosacea also get eye problems like redness, swelling, and pain.
Other symptoms patients may get are;
- Stinging and burning of the skin
- Patches of rough, dry skin
- A swollen, bulb-shaped nose
- Larger pores
- Broken blood vessels on the eyelids
- Bumps on the eyelids
- Problems with seeing
A patient’s rosacea symptoms can come and go. They might flare up for a few weeks, fade, and then come back.
When to see the Doctor
Patients must see a doctor if they have persistent symptoms that could be caused by rosacea. Early diagnosis and treatment can help stop the condition getting worse.
There’s no specific test for rosacea, but the doctor will often be able to diagnose the condition by:
- examining your skin
- asking about your symptoms
- asking about possible triggers you may have
In some circumstances the doctor may arrange further tests to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms, such as lupus or the menopause. For example, these could be a blood test or skin biopsy, where a small scraping of skin is removed and examined.
Treatments
Treatment for rosacea focuses on controlling signs and symptoms. Most often this requires a combination of good skin care and prescription drugs.
The duration of the treatment depends on the type and severity of the signs and symptoms. Recurrence is common.
- Medications
- Topical drugs that reduce redness
- Oral antibiotics
- Oral acne drug
- Therapies
- Laser therapy
- Other light-based therapies
