Pre-existing conditions can worsen during pregnancy, threatening the health of a mother and her child. Asthma, diabetes, and depression can harm the mother and child during pregnancy if not managed properly.
Pregnancy can cause a healthy mother’s red blood cell count to drop, a condition called anemia, or induce depression. Another problem arises when a productive cell implants outside the uterus, making further gestation unfeasible.
Factors or Situations to Avoid when pregnant
- Using tobacco or alcohol
- Being exposed to secondhand smoke, which may harm the fetus
- Having contact with cat litter or cat feces unless the cats are strictly confined to the home and are not exposed to other cats (such contact can transmit toxoplasmosis, an infection by a protozoan that can damage the fetus’s brain)
- Having contact with people who have rubella (German Measles) or other infections that can cause birth defects
- Having contact with people who have chickenpox or shingles unless the woman has had a test that shows she has had chickenpox and is immune to it
Complications that can occur with Pregnancy
- Ectopic Pregnancy – occurs when a fertilized ovum is implanted outside of the endometrial lining of the uterine wall
- Placenta Previa – a medical condition that occurs when the entire placenta or a portion of it covers the opening to the cervix
- Placental Abruption – occurs when a portion or the entire placenta detaches from the wall prior to birth
- Spontaneous Abortion – there are a variety of types of abortion ranging from those that are induced by medical intervention to those that occur due to fetal abnormality.
- Gestational Diabetes – a female who wasn’t diabetic before pregnancy can develop what is known as gestational diabetes
- Preeclampsia and Eclampsia – hypertension in pregnancy can be a serious concern
When a woman sees a doctor or another health care practitioner before she is pregnant, she can be given any needed vaccines, such as the rubella vaccine.
If she is not already taking folate, doctors can prescribe prenatal multivitamins that contain the recommended daily amount (RDA) of folate or a larger amount of folate if the woman has had a baby with a neural tube defect.
If needed, genetic screening can be done to determine whether the woman and her partner are at increased risk of having a baby with a hereditary genetic disorder.
Obstetricians can manage and treat common and rare health issues that emerge during pregnancies.
