Polymyositis is an uncommon inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness affecting both sides of a person’s body. Another word for inflammatory myopathy is myositis. Having this condition can make it difficult to climb stairs, rise from a seated position, lift objects or reach overhead.
Polymyositis most commonly affects adults in their 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. Women are more often affected than men.
Symptoms
The muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, hips, thighs and neck display the most weakness in PM. There can also be pain or tenderness in the affected areas, as well as swallowing problems and inflammation of the heart and lung muscle tissues.
