Fat grafting, also referred to as fat transfer or fat injections, is a surgical process by which fat is transferred from one area of the body to another area. The surgical goal is to improve or augment the area where fat is injected.
It involves extracting adipose fat by liposuction, processing the fat, and then reinjecting purified fat in the area needing improvement.
In fat grafting, fat tissue is removed from other parts of the body — usually from the thighs, belly, and buttocks — by liposuction.
Aesthetic indications for undergoing lipofilling include sunken cheeks, the disappearance of fat from the cheekbones, deep grooves running from the nose to the corners of the mouth, and in some instances lines between the lower eyelids and the cheek. It is also the most common method used for lip enhancement.
Fat transfer looks and feels more natural than breast and butt implants. Traditional plastic surgery with implants requires an incision, dissecting a “pocket”, and placing the implant into the pocket before stitching to finish.
In fat transfer, there is only a small incision and almost no cutting. Injecting into smaller areas of face, like the cheek, lower eyelid hollows, and lips.
Anyone who wants more than a very modest size change will require multiple injection sessions to work up the results – and even then, there is only so much healthy tissue that can be harvested and injected. (Bony areas typically won’t work as donor sites.)
The patients must also have a healthy blood supply to support the healing of living tissue afterwards.
