A ganglion cyst is a small sac of fluid that forms over a joint or tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). Inside the cyst is a thick, sticky clear, colorless, jellylike material. Depending on the size, cysts may feel firm or spongy.
Small ganglion cyst can be pea-sized, while larger ones can be around an inch (2.5 centimeters) in diameter. Ganglion cyst can be painful if they press on a nearby nerve. Their location can sometimes interfere with joint movement.
Symptoms
The lumps associated with ganglion cysts can be characterized by;
- Location – ganglion cysts most commonly develop along the tendons of the wrists or hands. The next most common are the ankles and feet. These cysts can occur near other joints as well.
- Shape and size – ganglion cysts are round or oval and usually measures less than an inch (2.5 centimeter) in diameter. Some are so small that they can’t be felt. The size of a cyst can fluctuate, often getting larger when the joints are used for repetitive motions.
- Pain – ganglion cysts usually are painless. But if a cyst presses on a nerve – even if the cyst is too small to form a noticeable lump – it can cause pain, tingling, numbness or muscle weakness.
When to Seek Medical Care
Whether a person has symptoms or not, the ganglion cyst can benefit from medical evaluation. The doctor can be sure if a person has a ganglion cyst, and help decide on the best treatment plan.
Treatment
Many cysts can disappear without any treatment at all. Various treatments have been proposed over the years. Some include no specific treatment other than reducing worry regarding the cyst, using a needle to remove the cyst’s contents (aspiration), or surgery.
