Penile cancer, or cancer of the penis, is when cells grow out of control on or in a man’s penis. It often starts in skin cells and can work its way inside. It’s rare but it can be treated, especially if it’s found early on.
Types of Penile Cancer
- Squamous Cell or Epidermoid Carcinoma – this makes up 95% of penile cancer cases. It usually starts on or under the foreskin but can also appear on other parts of the penis.
- Sarcoma – these cancers form in tissues like blood vessels, muscle, and fat.
- Melanoma – this is cancer that starts in the cells that give the skin color.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma – these cancers start deep in the skin. They grow slowly and aren’t likely to spread to other areas of the body.
Signs and Symptoms of Penile Cancer
Changes in penis skin are the most common symptom of penile cancer. They can show up on the foreskin of uncircumcised men, on the penis tip (the glans), or on the shaft.
Symptoms of penile cancer include:
- Changes in skin thickness or color.
- A rash or small crusty bumps on the penis; it can look like an unhealed scab.
- Growths that look bluish-brown.
- A lump on the penis
- A bad-smelling discharge underneath the foreskin
- A sore on the penis, which may bleed
- Swelling at the end of the penis
- Swelling at the end of the penis
- Lumps under the skin of the groin
Treatments
Treatment for penile cancer will depend on the size of the affected area and the rate at which the cancer has spread.
For example, in most cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS), where only the skin cells of the penis are affected, treatment will usually involve either using a chemotherapy cream or having laser surgery to remove the affected area of the skin. Patients will usually have a skin graft after surgery.
The main treatment for penile cancer that isn’t at a very early stage are;
- Surgery
- Radiotherapy
- Chemotherapy
Surgery will involve removing the cancerous cells and possibly some of the surrounding tissue.
In most cases, any physical changes to the penis after an operation can be corrected with reconstructive surgery. Skin and muscle can be taken from elsewhere in the body to recreate a functioning penis.
