Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help the body fight by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs.
Multiple myeloma causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, where they crowd out healthy blood cells. Rather than produce helpful antibodies, the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause complications.

Multiple myeloma is one of the many conditions that can cause problems with the plasma cells. Others include;
- Monoclonal gammopathy – this when the plasma cells make too many copies of one antibody.
- Solitary plasmacytoma – this is like multiple myeloma, but causes a single unusual plasma cell growth rather than many of them.
- Light chain amyloidosis – this causes unusual plasma cells in the bone marrow, but there are fewer of them than with multiple myeloma.
- Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia – this a type of both monoclonal gammopathy and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system.
Symptoms and signs of multiple myeloma include;
- Anemia
- Bone tenderness
- Bone pain
- Weakness
- Bone fracture
- Kidney damage
- Hypercalcemia
- Nerve damage
- Skin lesions
- Enlarged tongue
- Infections
Treatments
There is currently no cure for multiple myeloma, but treatment can often help control it for several years.
Treatment will often involve;
- A combination of anti-myeloma medications to destroy the myeloma cells
- Medicines and procedures to prevent and treat problems caused by myeloma, such as bone pain, fractures and anemia.
- Anti-myeloma medicines to control the cancer when it comes back (relapses)
